About Us
The Berhan Foundation is a private charitable foundation advancing sustainable development and meaningful social change across the Global South. We believe that every person — regardless of where they were born or what circumstances they face, deserves access to the tools and opportunities that make a full life possible.
We support organizations at the frontlines of that work: nonprofits, community groups, and institutions tackling the interconnected challenges of poverty, inequality, and lack of access that hold so many people back. Through strategic, long-term grantmaking in education, healthcare, legal assistance, and economic empowerment, we help our partners go deeper, reach further, and create change that lasts.
We work directly with communities, not around them. We believe local leaders and grassroots organizations hold the knowledge, relationships, and commitment that sustainable change requires. Our role is to resource and amplify their work, not to define it for them.
Our work is grounded in a fundamental principle: dignity is not earned, it is inherent. And when people are treated with dignity, given genuine opportunity, and supported with the right resources, they are capable of transforming not just their own lives, but the communities around them.
Our Approach
Good intentions are not enough. The Berhan Foundation takes a deliberate, evidence-informed approach to grantmaking — one that prioritizes systemic impact over short-term outputs.
We look for partners who are addressing root causes, not just symptoms. We fund programs designed to build lasting capacity within communities — programs that continue to generate impact long after direct funding ends. And we are committed to relationships with our grantees that go beyond the transactional: listening deeply, learning continuously, and adjusting as the work evolves.
We focus our resources where they can do the most good — in communities across the Global South that are too often overlooked by mainstream philanthropy. By concentrating our work in four interconnected areas, we are able to address the overlapping barriers that prevent communities from reaching their potential, and to invest in solutions that are practical, community-developed, and built to endure.
Our Vision
A world where every person, regardless of where they were born, has access to the education, healthcare, economic opportunity, and legal protection they need to live with dignity and reach their full potential. A world where equity is not an aspiration, but a reality.
We know that world is not built overnight. But we also know it is built one community at a time, one program at a time, one life at a time. That is the work we show up for — every day.
Our Mission
The Berhan Foundation strengthens individuals and communities across the Global South by investing in the programs, organizations, and leaders driving lasting change. We do this through:
-
Expanding access to quality education for children and adults
-
Advancing community-centered healthcare solutions that reach those most in need
-
Equipping individuals with the skills, resources, and support to achieve economic independence
-
Providing legal assistance and advocacy for marginalized and underserved communities
We believe transformation begins with dignity. By tackling structural inequalities and building the capacity of communities to lead their own change, we help create progress that is lasting, equitable, and real.
OUR VALUES
Integrity
We hold ourselves to the highest standards of transparency, honesty, and accountability — with our grantees, our donors, and the communities we serve. Trust is the foundation of everything we do, and we work every day to earn it.
Empathy
We lead with compassion. We approach our work with genuine respect for the people and communities at the center of it — listening first, learning always, and never losing sight of the human reality behind every program and every grant.
Empowerment
We believe communities are the experts on their own needs, strengths, and futures. Our role is to support their leadership — not to substitute our judgment for theirs. We invest in people's capacity to drive their own change.
Collaboration
No single organization can create the change the world needs. We believe in the power of partnership — working closely with local organizations, international bodies, governments, and fellow funders to amplify impact and avoid duplication. Together, we go further.
Sustainability
We are in this for the long haul. We prioritize solutions that are community-owned, community-driven, and built to endure — programs that create lasting benefit long after our direct involvement ends. Impact that fades is not the impact we are after.
Why it Matters
The Global South is home to extraordinary people, cultures, and communities — and to persistent, structural inequalities that deny too many people the opportunities they deserve. Access to education, healthcare, legal protection, and economic opportunity are not distributed equally. They never have been.
The Berhan Foundation exists to help change that — not by swooping in with outside solutions, but by partnering with the organizations and leaders already doing the work. We provide the resources. They provide the knowledge, the relationships, and the commitment. Together, we create change that lasts.
We are guided by the legacy of Mr. Girma Mekonnen and Mrs. Tsehai Kebede, who believed with their whole lives that prosperity carries a responsibility to others. We carry that belief into every grant we make, every partnership we build, and every community we serve.
