Who We Are
The Berhan Foundation is a private charitable foundation committed to sustainable development and lasting social transformation across the Global South. We partner with organizations doing courageous, community-driven work in education, healthcare, legal assistance, and economic empowerment — the areas where access and opportunity matter most.
Our approach is grounded in a simple belief: people are not problems to be solved. They are leaders, innovators, and agents of their own futures. Our role is to resource that potential — with funding, with partnership, and with trust.
We work alongside local leaders and grassroots organizations who understand their communities from the inside. We listen before we act. We invest for the long term. And we measure our success not by outputs, but by the depth and durability of the change we help create.
Funding Areas
The Berhan Foundation supports four core grantmaking programs. Each reflects our conviction that no single intervention is enough — that true transformation requires addressing the interconnected barriers that keep communities from reaching their potential.
Education

Education is the most powerful force for breaking the cycle of poverty. But for millions of children and adults across the Global South, access to quality learning remains out of reach — not for lack of ambition, but for lack of resources and opportunity.
We support organizations that change that equation. From scholarships that keep students in school, to the construction of classrooms in underserved communities, to the distribution of books, technology, and teaching materials — we fund the infrastructure of possibility. When a child learns to read, or an adult earns a credential that opens a new door, the ripple effects reach far beyond that one life. Families are lifted. Communities are strengthened. Futures are rewritten.
Economic Empowerment

Economic independence is not a luxury — it is the foundation of a dignified life. Yet structural barriers, limited access to capital, and lack of skills training keep too many people locked out of economic opportunity.
We fund programs that change the odds. Skills training, microenterprise support, workforce development, and financial literacy initiatives — each one designed to help individuals and families achieve real, sustainable self-sufficiency. We believe that when a person gains the tools to support themselves and their family, the impact multiplies across generations.
Healthcare

Access to quality healthcare is not a privilege — it is a fundamental human right. Yet across much of the Global South, that right remains out of reach for the communities who need it most. Preventable conditions go untreated. Mothers face childbirth without skilled support. Children grow up without the basic care that allows them to thrive.
We support programs that deliver essential medical care, supplies, and equipment to underserved communities. From mobile clinics and maternal health initiatives to training community health workers, we fund the programs that close the gap between need and care. Because a healthy community is a community with a future.
Legal Assistance

Justice should never depend on how much money you have. But for millions of people in marginalized and underserved communities, the legal system is effectively inaccessible — too costly, too complex, and too far removed from daily life.
We support legal assistance programs that bridge that gap — providing free and low-cost legal services to those who would otherwise go without representation. Whether navigating land rights, family law, immigration status, or labor disputes, access to legal support can be the difference between vulnerability and protection. We believe every person deserves to know their rights and have someone in their corner.
Funding That Endures - Their Generosity. Our Mission. Your Future.
The Berhan Foundation was born from a love story, and from the conviction that prosperity carries a responsibility to others.
The foundation honors the legacy of Mr. Girma Mekonnen and Mrs. Tsehai Kebede, two extraordinary people who spent 67 years building a life rooted in family, integrity, and service. Mr. Mekonnen was a pioneering airline executive; Mrs. Kebede, a successful entrepreneur. Together, they raised a family and built careers, and never lost sight of their belief that what you achieve in this life should benefit others.
Our name carries their story. Berhan (bɛrˈhɑːn) means "light" in Amharic, the national language of Ethiopia. The name comes from Mr. Mekonnen's term of endearment for his wife — Berhane (bɛrˈhɑːnɛ), meaning "my light." Just as Mrs. Kebede was a guiding light to her husband, children, and community, the Berhan Foundation works to illuminate pathways to equity, dignity, and hope for people who need it most.
The foundation was established through the generosity of their estate. But more powerful than the gift was the message behind it: change begins when people decide to act. Mr. Mekonnen and Mrs. Kebede acted — and because of that, the Berhan Foundation exists.
Their belief in practical, sustainable solutions continues to shape everything we do. We invest in programs built for long-term impact, not quick fixes or one-time interventions. We work alongside local leaders, grassroots organizations, and global partners to design programs that respond to real community needs, build local capacity, and endure long after our direct involvement ends.
We carry their legacy forward not as a memory, but as a living mission. Their vision was clear: a world where every child has access to education, every family can receive compassionate care, and every community has what it needs to prosper. Every student supported, every family reached, every community strengthened — each one reflects the enduring influence of two people who believed deeply in the dignity of every human being and acted on that belief.
Their story is our foundation. Their values are our compass. And their spirit, generous, principled, unstoppable, continues to light the way.
